Men's Center

Since 1934, the Williamsport American Rescue Workers has realized a need for a holistic ministry that would minister to the entire man spiritually, physically, materially and emotionally.

We have found that the homeless, socially maladjusted, alcoholic, drug addict, family dropout, paroled, unemployed and dysfunctional man continues to fall through the cracks of American society. They are left on the doorstep of the American dream while others that have better, or some opportunity surge ahead. Society in general thinks that these individuals ought to be able to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" and just get a job! But there is so much more to it than just "getting a job." Many things in life can be obtained, but the ability, the stamina and the desire to maintain is the key. Habits, hurts and hang-ups are major stumbling blocks in the lives of men, women and children in our communities and across our nation.

PURPOSE - To minister to the needs of individuals:

  • Spiritually
  • Physically
  • Emotionally & mentally
  • Materially

PLAN - To assist the following:

  • Homeless
  • Socially maladjusted
  • Alcoholic
  • Drug addict
  • Family dropout
  • Paroled persons
  • Unemployed
  • Dysfunctional

PROCEDURE - To provide:

  • Home atmosphere - where the basic needs of food, clothing, shelter and friendship are met on a daily basis.
  • Work therapy - keeps minds and hands busy, teaching interaction skills between authority figures and co-workers. Organizational and basic job skills.
  • Counseling - fulfills the need of sharing shortcomings and goals with others that care whether with a group or on an individual basis.
  • Spiritual enrichment - Biblical principals are taught in daily devotions, Sunday School, Worship services and Bible Study.

Emergency Transient Lodging - is a program designed to provide immediate shelter for a man in transition. Seven nights of lodging, a clean change of clothes and 3 hot meals each day is extended without any questions asked. Depending on weather, availability and personal situation, an extension of this program is sometimes granted. Otherwise, a job and/or housing is procured and the individual in transition moves on. This program is for anyone 18 years and above, from anywhere, and at no cost.

Men's Center Program - is a program designed to provide an individual an extended stay in which to re-evaluate themselves personally, materially and spiritually. Shelter, clean clothing, personal items, 3 hot meals is provided daily. A 40 hour per week work therapy routine is part of our Men's Center Program; providing the individual the opportunity to learn basic work skills and relevant relationships, giving the client emotional satisfaction of becoming productive to society. Strict adherence to the Center's Rules and Regulations determine the length of stay for an individual, but normally is 90 days to 9 months. Total abstinence from any habit-forming substance is required, but if disregarded, is reason for immediate dismissal. Upon expulsion for violation, clients may re-apply after a 30 day waiting period. Clients receive an allowance per week for personal items. There is no charge for this program, however, if a client has an established income, the American Rescue Workers asked for a percentage as a "Program Service Fee." Men must be 18 years of age and sober upon application to this program. Individuals qualify for the Men's Center Program that are or have been residents from Lycoming County or within a 60 mile radius of Williamsport for a 6 month period or longer.

Our entire Men's Center Shelter Programs are under constant scrutiny and observation as we seek and desire to make changes and updates that continue to minister to the whole man and are relevant to today's world and tomorrow's eternity.
