The Love Center
Soup Kitchen & Social Service Center
Jersey Shore, PA

In the late summer of 1982 the Jersey Shore Area Church of God began a social service ministry called "The People that Love Center" in the little town of Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. The "Love Center Kitchen Project" was started in June of 1983 by the Jersey Shore Area Assembly of God Church because the Church of God did not have a kitchen in-house. The two ministries merged and moved into the present facilities at the corner of Howard and Allegheny Streets in October of 1983. Financial and staffing difficulties ensued.

After much prayer and deliberation, the Board of Directors of "The People that Love Center" overwhelmingly voted 10 to 1 to invite the American Rescue Workers,Williamsport Corps, to assume responsibility of the work. The organization's National Board of Managers approved the merger and the "Love Center" became an arm of the American Rescue Workers on October 1, 1985.

The American Rescue Workers "Love Center" responds to Jesus' charge that we have genuine compassion for those in need in our community. Our ministries and programs help to alleviate some of the misery for those that find themselves in emergency situations, such as near homelessness, lack of food and adequate clothing, utility shut-off notices, etc.

The "Love Center" operates a Soup Kitchen Mondays through Fridays, serving a hot meal between 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM. A Food Pantry provides individuals and families with a 3-day emergency supply of groceries. Staff, employees, volunteers and community service workers participate in devotions and prayer each morning, providing them spiritual enrichment and encouraging support. Individuals applying for assistance are afforded a private interview with the Director to determine the urgency of need and eligibility.

The needs of many individuals and families that qualify are met through the numerous resources provided from Lycoming County United Way, HAP funds, FEMA funds, TEFAP, private foundations, churches and individual support.

We most recently started the "Clinton County Care" project by networking with officials from Clinton County in efforts to alleviate homelessness and near homelessness in the neighboring county.

The Love Center operates with a devoted staff consisting of a full-time Director, Administrative Assistant, Cook, and many volunteers and community service workers. It is financially supported by many area churches, businesses and private contributions. Anyone interested in contributing to the ministry of The Love Center may call 570-398-1551, Monday - Fridays, 9AM - 3 PM.
