Ladies Auxiliary

In the early 1980's, ladies from area churches, civic groups, businesses and personal acquaintances, were invited to a luncheon. At this luncheon, the Commanding Officer shared his heart for the need of a ladies support group. This group would embrace the ministries of the American Rescue Workers to the hungry, homeless and hurting, by providing volunteer aid and group support to the Williamsport Corps through many different avenues. A President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer were elected at this initial introductory luncheon.

Our Ladies Auxiliary has been an inspiration, an immediate source of prayer and has had a direct "hand's-on" approach in the ministry of the local corps from that time until today. Today their meetings still reflect the social and spiritual need for the assembly of women in support of each other, as well as performing work projects. The ladies feel the need and urgency of the matters brought before them and they respond with much concern and compassion. Mostly consisting of women over the age of 55, their sessions are not only one of accomplishment for the American Rescue Workers, but provide a relaxed setting in which they can be of support to the personal issues they each face as life changes all around us at a pace many find hard to adapt to.

The Ladies Auxiliary meets the first Monday of each month October thru May. June thru September are vacation months or family time and there are no meetings held then.

A typical Ladies Auxiliary meeting consists of devotions, secretary's minutes and treasurer's reports, an offering, educational updates on corps activities, a work project, or an occasional speaker.

Work projects have consisted of the preparation of direct mail appeals involving between 5,000 - 25,000 pieces, donating baked goods for our Bi-Annual Antique and Collectible Charity Auctions, giving birthday cards and gifts of new socks for the Men's Center residents, Christmas stockings of personal care items for residents and transients, preparing Christmas candy cups to needy families, filling Easter candy bags for residents and needy children, raising funds for renovation projects, and contributions of toys, hats, gloves and scarves for Christmas distribution.
